Wellbeing City Award, the first international award of its kind that recognizes cities who care for their citizens well-being, has nominated 16 finalists and Kigali made the list.
Kigali, the only African city that made the list was nominated in the health sector. They were shortlisted for this award due to the bi-monthly Car Free Day physical exercise organized for city residents, who also receive health checkups for any kind of health complications.
NewCities, a non-profit global organization which focuses on forming a better urban future developed the awards. They work with leaders from government, arts and media, academia, business and civil society sectors. This edition was launched in September 2018. 16 out of over 100 cities from 27 countries and 6 continents made it to the final categories.

Kigali in the public health category will be competing alongside Gothenburg (Sweden), Los Angeles (USA) and Vancouver (Canada)
The four categories for the award are; Public Health, Economy, Opportunity Community and Sustainable Environment.
Novartis Foundation, a Swiss-based philanthropic organization that specializes on sustainable impact on the health of low-income communities through a combination of programmatic work, health outcomes research, and its translation into policy to address global health challenges, The Canadian City of Montréal, Toyota Mobility Foundation, and the US Green Building Council are partners for the awards.
