The Big 5 Daily: Sawari Ventures Closes New $70 million Fund, Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin Included in CNN’s Top 2018 Heroes and More

According to a tweet by BongoHive, Zambia’s AgriPredict wins the Africa 2018 Business Forum in Egypt’s start-up pitch competition and the $10K funding that came with it. Founded by Mwiza Simbeye and Patrick Sikalinda in 2016, AgriPredict uses AI and Machine Learning to reduce agricultural risk for smallholder farmers.


Still on the Africa 2018 Business Forum, Egypt’s Venture Capitalist firm, Sawari Ventures has announced its latest fund – $70 million – with the first closing of $35 million announced at the event. The fund, dubbed “Sawari Ventures North Africa Fund I (SVNFI),” will be invested in technology and knowledge-driven companies in Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco.


Uber Technologies have launched a 24/7 phone support for its ride-hailing platform in South Africa and Kenya. Passengers and drivers in these countries can now tap ‘help’ in the menu of their Uber app to connect with a 24/7 support team.


Yesterday, CNN announced their Top 10 Heroes for 2018 and Nigeria’s Abisoye Ajayi-Akinfolarin made the shortlist. Abisoye is a computer programmer and the founder of Pearls Africa Foundation, an initiative that teaches disadvantaged young girls in Lagos Nigeria how to code.


After discovering another software fault in Google+, Google says it would shut down the social media platform. This error caused a data breach, allowing partner apps to access data like emails, gender and age. However, Google claims that nobody capitalised on this breach.This makes the second fault discovered in a year.


And to round up our list, Instagram has started rolling out a voice messaging feature – Instagram Direct to increase appeal and usability. The voice message feature can record up to one-minute and can be used in private and group chats on both iOS and Android platforms.
