The Big 5 Daily: UK Invests $2.6 million in Nigeria Fintech, SA’s Start-up, Wala Wins 2018 Zambezi Grand Prize and Others

We start today’s big 5 with the new partnership deal between the Nigerian Government and UK government.

During her three-day diplomatic visit, British Prime Minister, Theresa May announced a $2.6 million UK-Nigeria fintech partnership. The fintech partnership, which is valued at 2 million pounds is to support Nigerian innovators.

Kudos to the UK Government, it remains our hope right now that the fund is channeled  to the right sources


The Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship in partnership with Mastercard Foundation has announced South African start-up, Wala as the winner of the 2018 Zambezi Prize for Innovation in Financial Inclusion in Nairobi Kenya.

Wala is a mobile financial platform geared towards consumers operating outside the formal financial system. Other winners include; Tulaa (Kenya), RecyclePoints (Nigeria), Apollo Agriculture (Kenya), Bidhaa Sasa (Kenya), FarmDrive (Kenya), Farmerline (Ghana), LanteOTC (South Africa), MaTontine (Senegal), and OZÉ (Ghana).


Moving on, Canadian Fintech start-up, Citrusxchange Inc. has launched its Blockchain platform in Kenya.

The new platform will cater to small and medium enterprises seeking supply chain financing and invoice financing.  It is the advanced stage of contracting with banks and finance companies around the world and it operates under the very flexible Opex business model.


On the global scale, Apple expected to Unveil Latest Iphones at September 12 Event….  Apple Inc. has sent out invitations to an event where it will unveil new photos of its iPhone. Apple has historically been known to hold September events to unveil its new iPhone models.


On our start-up spotlight, we did a review of a Blood Delivering Drone Start-up in Rwanda named Zipline. This drone technology plays a huge role saving lives, very much like MamaOpe, Nigeria’s Flying Doctors, and Egypt’s Mubser.
