Music streaming giant, Tidal has been ushered into the African ecosystem with a new partnership with MTN. The offering launch, which was held in Uganda on the 22nd of August opened up the doors of access for the 10.5 million Ugandan customers MTN has to the streaming service in a deal that includes streaming data.
In the agreement, the customers will be privy to a free 30-day trial period on Tidal and will be given the options to sign up for one, three, seven and 30-day subscription.
Uganda is the second African country to support Tidal, with South Africa being the first, however this deal is a first of its kind for the company with an African Nation.
With the success of this deal, reports have it that plans have been made to expand to other Countries with MTN presence.
“Africa is a continent that has long been an inspiration for music heard around the world and Tidal is excited to highlight the vibrant musicians on our platform,” COO, Lior Tibon said in a statement. “Tidal is also thrilled to bring a new wave of digital music to Uganda as part of this collaboration.”

The streaming market has seen a huge boost over the years and eyes have fallen on the African Market. Major Labels have taken the initiative to set up arms in Africa and are doing all within possible means to ramp up streaming numbers and legal consumption of music. Streaming giants have also seen this opportunity and have decided to tap into it, Tidal just joined the list.
“I remember hearing stories about my father‘s records being destroyed once they got to Africa,” said Damian Marley, a Tidal artist-owner, in a statement. “They didn’t want the people to hear the message in the music. What a beautiful day it is now when Africa will not only have access to my family’s music but to all music that exists.”
This is great news for the music community, artistes and labels alike.
