YouTube Shorts, a short video feature from YouTube allows users to share 15-second videos like Instagram’s Reels and TikTok. Google launched its early beta in India on Tuesday. This explains why Google did not join Microsoft and Oracle to bid for TikTok’s US operations.
Google decided to launch YouTube Shorts in India, TikTok’s former biggest overseas market. India recently banned TikTok due to some “national security and defence issues” and President Donald Trump has asked TikTok to either leave or sell out its US operations.
With YouTube Shorts, a user can create short videos on YouTube’s mobile app. It has a handful of new cameras and editing tools for creating videos. There is an option for making 60 seconds long multiple video clips, use speed controls, times, and add music to video clips. The videos will appear in a row dedicated to it on the homepage.
The create button is on the bottom bar of navigation on the Android app. Chris Jaffe, VP of Product Management at YouTube said they are currently working on making it available on the iOS app. YouTube Shorts is another strategy to entertain over 2 billion monthly existing and new users on the app.
