Did you know Google ended its free Wifi Programme in South Africa this week? The changes in the ecosphere, coupled with diverse technical requirements, spurred its decision to shut down the programme.
Next, Microsoft has launched a single mobile application that will support all its work tools, including Microsoft, Excel, and Powerpoint. The 3-in-1 app will help you continue your work anywhere you go. The app is available on both Andriod and iOS devices.
Meanwhile, the cryptocurrency business in Nigeria has witnessed a leap with recognition from Africa and European investors. One such investment lead is from Europe-based clearing house, Payitup. The syndicate invested $15million in Bitfxt – a Nigerian owned Crypto business.
Also, on investment, Carbon has launched a 100,000 dollars fund to support tech startups in Africa. The company will invest $10,000 in different startups. In return, Carbon will get 5% equity.
Still, on the money-making venture, Airtel Africa’s first IPO on the Malawi stock exchange has been fully subscribed. The IPO sold 2.2 billion shares and had a return of $37.5 million.
Yet we have another worthwhile funding initiative. This time it is from Multichoice Group. The pay-TV is set to support startups with a turnover of R50 million through its Innovation Fund.
In South Africa, the country’s Independent and Communications Authority, ICASA has drafted a new law that will guide employment procedures in the ICT sector. The bill will promote employment, ownership equity for the disadvantage, and provide Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment B-BBEE.
Also, the competition commission in South Africa has overhauled Taxi Licensing in the country. The move would facilitate favourable competition in the taxi industry.
And as we rap up on the Africa Tech News Roundup for the week, The Nigeria Communication Commission has reiterated its effort to promote quality phones in the country. A recent report released by the commission listed about 1,492 phone brands and models that passed the commission’s Approval Standard test.
Finally, Vodacom has revealed plans to launch its 5G network later this year. The telco with partner Huawei in this venture.
