The Chinese government has provided over 800 digital television sets to Kenya. This is part of its plan to digitize 10000 Villages through a Digital Television Project.

The Ksh 842,708,300 worth project was first announced in 2015 during the 6th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). President Xi Jinping announced plans to digitize Africa to presidents, Ministers and representatives of the African Union present at the event.

The Digital Television Project has been implemented across 47 African countries. It was launched in Kenya in June 2018. Over 800 digital televisions sets have been installed in public institutions and selected individual households. Satellite dishes, a high definition set-top boxes and accessories have been installed in over 20 households in 800 villages.

Three public institutions in each village received two solar-powered satellite projector TV systems and a 32-inch television set. In Kenya alone, over 16000 individual households and 2400 public institutes have benefited from the Digital Television project.

The 1000 Village project was rolled out by the Ministry of ICT and StarTimes. It has provided jobs for 1600 youths who work as maintenance personnel. Joe Mucheru, the ICT Cabinet Secretary admitted that the satellite television technology has reached every corner of the country during the handover ceremony.
