Conlog, a Durban based metering solutions provider in conjunction with Wits University’s Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct is set to launch a blockchain incubation programme, Reaple. The programme which focuses on blockchain and smart city solutions will be hosted by Tshimologong.

Tshimologong said the programme will be delivered in seven phases which will groom tech businesses, digital products and ideas into viable businesses. Tshimologong, head of marketing Kendal Makgamathe said the Precinct is excited about the launch. He said the programme will aid in growing Conlog’s innovation capacity in smart connected metering technology.

In his words, “The programme will enhance Conlog’s business transformation journey by forging technical advisory partnerships with Wits University faculties and its research students.”

Seven-phase programme

In the first phase of the programme, aspiring software developers — with at least three years’ experience in Java, Javascript, C++, Python or C# — will get the chance to participate in a meetup on the 19th of March.

The second phase of the programme :  will take place between 20 and 25 March, 20 developers will be selected from the meet-up, to participate in an online assessment, which will identify the top performers, who will be trained on the core principles and foundations of coding using blockchain.

To meet BEE requirements, Reapele’s website states that preference will be given to black software developers.

Within the 1st to 5th of April, about 10 developers will be invited for initial training which will be followed by a third phase participation to hold between 8th and 12th April.

The phase four of the programme will take place between 15th and 17th, April, as well as on the 23rd and 24th, April. Here, participants will receive training in blockchain and smart metering.

The fifth phase of the programme is a three-day hackathon set between May 2 and 4, where candidates will be challenged to develop a blockchain proof of concept, in partnership with Johannesburg-based blockchain hub and business incubator Blockstarters .  Winners of the hackathon will receive a R20 000 grand prize.

Phase six of the programme , is a five-day Design Sprint between the 13th and 17th of May where candidates will have their tech solutions tested with Conlog’s clients.

In the last phase of the programme, which will take place between May 20 and June 27, developers that have developed a blockchain solution will enter into an intensive incubation period.

The program will provide a platform for further development of participants’ respective proof of concepts, culminating in live demos of the blockchain solutions to potential clients.

Participants will also get help in developing a marketing plan and a business model, before solutions are presented on June 28.
