Facebook to Change WhatsApp and Instagram name

Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp and Instagram, has revealed plans to rename WhatsApp and Instagram as part of its re-brand process. The apps will subsequently be known as “WhatsApp from Facebook” and “Instagram from Facebook”.

Facebook has allowed both apps to run separately since buying over both companies. The apps branding does not in any way suggest that Facebook owns the companies. This move will, however, make it clear to anyone using the app, that Facebook owns WhatsApp and Instagram.

The new titles will appear on Facebook’s internal branding. It will also be visible for both WhatsApp and Instagram on Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play store. But the names on all devices home screen will remain as it is for now, with the new name appearing once the user opens the apps.

The company said it had made the decision “to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook”.

Facebook already implemented this new move on its workplace communication app, “Workplace from Facebook“, on Oculus—its virtual reality platform, as well as its Instagram app, “Boomerang from Instagram”.

This change is in a bid to integrate all three social media networks, left to operate separately whilst powering them with one infrastructure.
