Big news! In a bid to curb fake news, Facebook is adding checks to local language contents on its platform, among African users. This is part of an ongoing third-party fact-checking program in partnership with Africa Check, an independent fact-checking organization. The collaborating is to enhance the support of local African languages. The full story is on the blog!
Next, on the Big 5, Hello Tomorrow Global Challenge is a global startup competition for promising early-stage projects & startups, who leverage technology to solve the world’s challenges. It is calling on African startups to submit applications for its 6th edition. The grand winner will stand a chance of winning a whopping sum of €100k and more. Also, Seedstars in partnership with the DOEN Foundation – a Dutch fund supporting green initiatives, calls on applicants to submit applications for the DOEN Land Restoration Prize. They will leverage the competition to select and award startups in the land restoration and land degradation space. The winner will receive a $10k grant and more. Bosch, a German multinational engineering and technology company headquartered in Gerlingen, has called for its smart mobility pitch submission. The competition is in a bid to promote solutions that address mobility issues. The 10 selected winners will win $30,00 grand prize and more. Application closes on the 26th August 2019. Finally, A report from the Wall Street Journal has accused Huawei technicians of aiding Ugandan and Zambia governments to spy on their political opponents, which eventually led to the arrest of the opponents. The report reveals anonymous senior surveillance officers involved in the case. It also revealed that the investigation wasn’t able to connect a direct tie between the Chinese government or Huawei executives to the act. You can read the detailed report on the blog.
