South African agritech startup, FarmRanger tracks livestock via technology and it does so with an absolutely interesting piece of technology. The technology comprises of a mobile app and a GPS electronic collar, worn on selected animals in a herd. To prevent a theft or predator attack, the collar sends an alarm to the mobile app and the farmer’s phone whenever it detects unusual movements. The farmer then follows the GPS location provided on the app to track and rescue animals.

The FarmRanger app provides insight to daily location, animal positions and the battery level of the collar, on smartphones and via SMS messages on other mobile devices. The collar is 100% waterproof and can be adjusted to fit any livestock. It works on a mobile GPRS network and the battery life lasts up to six months when recharged properly. The technologically enabled solution supports farmers with detailed information on the whereabouts of animals. This way, farmers can even monitor the animals at night.

FarmRanger is designed to deliver timely information for quick response and theft prevention. This technology is not only useful in farmlands; it can also be used to protect wildlife from poachers. According to a report, 30000 species are driven to extinction per year as a result of illegal hunting and poaching. Poaching does not only affect the population of animals, but the foreman could also get injured or lose his life in the process.

FarmRanger is a product of Alphawave Group. With a track record of more than 20 years, they have successfully introduced over 4500 active units to 2000 medium and large farmlands across South Africa and Namibia.
