Garner’s latest report for the second quarter of 2020 shows that global smartphone sales declined by 20.4%. The rapid decline is a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global mobile phone industry.

Samsung was reported to have experienced the largest decline in sales whereas, Apple was nearly flat year-over-year. Huawei, on the other hand, experienced 27.4% growth, quarter-over-quarter, and reached a virtual tie with Samsung for the highest number of global smartphone sales.

Except for China, every other country continued to experience a decline in smartphone demand. The travel restrictions, business shutdown, and economic situation during the total lockdown led to a consecutive quarterly decline in global smartphone sales. Chine only experienced a 7% decline in Q2, compared to India which happened to be the most affected with sales decline at 46%.

Amongst the top five global smartphone vendors, Samsung has a 27.1% decline year-on-year. Global smartphone sales declined for Xiaomi by 21.5%, OPPO by 15.9%, and Apple by 0.4%.

Samsung nearly sold 55million smartphones, Huawei sold 54 million phones, and Apple sold 38 million iPhones in Q2 2020. For more information, get Gartner’s full report: Market Share: PCs, Ultramobiles and Mobile Phones, All Countries, 2Q20 Update.
