In a bid to empower communities through literacy development, GE—a digital industrial company and United for Kids Foundation (UKF)—a non-profit organization has set up a mobile library for pupils in Lagos, Nigeria.

The literacy development project tagged ‘Read to me’ has already commenced in four primary schools in Akowonjo in Lagos, Nigeria. the project will help teach pupils how to read correctly and also boost their literacy levels.

Chief Communications & Public Affairs Officer, GE Africa, Patricia Obozuwa explained during the Mobile Library launch at Akowonjo Primary School, that the idea to sponsor the Mobile Library was borne out of the numerous interactions and experiences they have gathered from years of partnering with the UKF. She added that the initiative is resourceful, considering that the library is a mobile library, meaning it can serve numerous schools concurrently.

According to Aameenah Yunus-Ali, the Programs Manager for UKF, they have been running the Read-To-Me literacy program for kids in different schools for about eight years.  Yunus-Ali also mentioned that they decided to use schools within the Alimosho Local Government Area to pioneer the Mobile Library due to its large population of primary school children also because it is easily accessible.

GE is a world Digital Industrial Company. They aim to transform industries with software-defined machines and solutions that are connected, responsive and predictive.

United for Kids Foundation (UKF) was founded in 2002 as a volunteer-led, not for profit organization. It is registered in Nigeria under the Corporate Affairs Commission regime as an incorporated trustees’ entity. UKF is established to provide charitable, health and educational activities for children in Nigeria. They aim to lessen the conditions of the poor, sick and orphaned children, by providing them with necessary tools to overcome poverty, sickness, and illiteracy.
