The challenge is open to all journalists, traditional publishers, news startups and associations who aim to create innovative digital media projects. The projects for the challenge can be experimental, however, they should have well-defined goals and a significant digital component. All selected projects will be eligible for the sum of $150,000 and up to 70% of the total project cost.
The challenges will be reviewed against several criteria, including a “sharing component”. This simply means that a project proposal can include publishing findings or a public seminar to encourage applicants to share the knowledge and learning to others.
Google in the last two years has trained over 4000 journalists across Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The benefit of this innovative challenge borders on its ability to boost the numbers of skilled and qualified journalists on the continent.
Application is currently open and will run till the 2nd of September 2019. Interested? Apply here.
