Google announced the launch of its popular training program, Digital Skills for Africa in Aba, Abia State.  The Digital Skills for Africa program is aimed at providing skills for both job seekers and business owners in Africa. It has been launched in over 100 communities across Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya, but this is its first time in eastern Nigeria.

The government of Abia State was excited at this news. Aba is a lucrative and commercial business hub in Eastern Nigeria where business owners owe multiple chains of stores for a range of products. Google’s launch of the Digital Skills for Africa will be beneficial to the business community of fabricators, local manufacturers and traders in Aba. It will drive business expansion, increase sales and create employment opportunities in the community.

Google Digital Skills is a free online course that provides video tutorials and short quiz in digital training for interested individuals. During the launch, the Head, Brand & Reputation for Google Sub-Saharan Africa, Mojolaoluwa Aderemi Makinde said that the Google Digital Skills for Africa aims to empower young Africans to succeed in the digital world. Google first announced the Digital Skills for Africa program in 2016, with a commitment of training 1 million Africans within one year. The program was extended for an additional 5 years in a bid to reach 10 million Africans. 

The initiative has been helpful in supporting individuals and communities develop skills, secure jobs and advance careers since inception. Over 3 million people have acquired digital skills across 29 African countries both online and offline. The courses are available in English, French, and Portuguese.
