Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other companies have backed the contract for the web principles launched by the World Wide Web Founder Tim Berner-Lee. This is in a bid to keep the web fit and prevent the internet from sliding into a state of “digital dystopia”

The contract for the web is a set of principles designed to guide the digital policy agendas of the web and safeguard the future of the web. The contract was created by representatives of 80 different organizations and is based on nine core principles.

The principles expatiate the duties of government, companies, and individuals to the webspace. It aids the enhancement of affordable internet access, cybersecurity, etc. by tech companies.

Meanwhile, at the official launch of the contract, the initiative got over 150 backings from various organizations including Facebook, Twitter, Google, Microsoft, DuckDuckGo, Electronic Frontier Foundation, GitHub amidst others.

Moreso, Ghana, Germany and France government has also signed the contract. This makes the three countries adopt the principles of the contract.

Tim Benners-Lee noted that the world might not need a ’10-year plan for the web. However, there is a need to turn the web around’. This need birthed the contract for the web.

We hope the launch of the Contract for Web will yield to its content and guide the users and operators of web services.
