Google has announced the launch of its second Google News Initiative Innovation Challenge (GNI) in Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey.
The initiative seeks to identify new and innovative initiatives that improve reader engagement and pursue new business opportunities for media.
The head of innovation at GNI, Ludovic Blecher, also disclosed that “The selected projects will be funded up to USD$150-000 and up to 70 percent of the total project cost.”
He further stated that “Funding is not available for editorial projects, but should instead be focused on reader engagement and exploring new business models.”
The first Google News Initiative Innovation Challenge resulted in 21 projects in 13 countries obtaining funding in 2020. Awardees came from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Morocco, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Turkey, and the UAE.
