Huawei is set to train Kenyan women in ICT through the Women In Technology Huawei (WITH) initiative. The goal of this initiative is to drive women inclusion in the ICT sector. Huawei Kenya will champion this project.

Huawei will leverage WITH to get more women ripe for technical careers. WITH aims to empower, connect and support women to take up carries in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) sector. The program will equip women with skills to scale them on the employment ladder.

A report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reveals that Kenya’s modern or formal sector employment had about 880,000 women compared to 1.68 million men in 2016.

This stat reveals that women in Kenya are underrepresented in the STEM formal sector. Huawei aims to address this stereotype through training over 4,000 women and girls by 2020.

Stone He, CEO Huawei Kenya noted that it is important to give opportunities to women in the ICT field. He said that the women will be mentored and trained to the level where they can take up senior managerial positions.

In his words; “We hope that one day Huawei will have a local female chief executive. We look forward to having more women at the management level and the goal can be realized if we provide them with the necessary skills.”
