Fijitsu, a Tokyo based information technology multinational has developed a new technology solution to help medical professionals digitize the walking habits of patients. The innovation is tagged Gyro sensor.

Walking has been an important means used by physicians to predict a patient’s state of health, especially those who have undergone surgical operations. Medical practitioners know that symptoms such as musculoskeletal, neural and cardiovascular conditions lead to these walking abnormalities.

In the medical field, it is essential to analyze the way patients walk and examine their changing symptoms and recovery status. Thus, a patient’s health status cannot be fully diagnosed only by examining the way he/she walks.

Gyro sensor evaluates 9 types of walking abnormalities like walking in short steps, circumduction, shuffling, etc and gives an accurate calculation of multiple characteristics. It would be used by medical practitioners to accurately diagnose symptoms and diseases. It will also allow patients to keep records of their recovery process.

Fijitsu’s Gyro sensor technology automatically quantifies factors such as the swing and stance time of a patient’s right and left leg. It also estimates the difference between the movements of both legs to determine a patient’s health status. This process is recorded by using a signal waveform emitted from gyro sensors attached to the patient’s ankles.

A statement released by Fijitsu explains that the demand for walking analysis technology in detecting early symptoms of diseases spurred the innovation.
