Hello guys, we have put together another exciting edition of the Big 5 Daily!

BRCK, at the Africa Tech Summit, Kigali announced its decision to acquire Surf to further connect Africa to the internet by providing affordable and reliable internet access to the public. This is an important moment in BRCK’s journey towards meeting Africa’s unique needs and expanding on the continent’s connectivity infrastructure. It will extend its reach to over 2,500 Hotpots across Kenya and Rwanda, serving a community of 500,000 users a month.


AirtelTigo recently launched AirtelTigo Business, its Business-to-Business arm in Accra, Ghana. AirtelTigo Business aims to provide end-to-end connectivity solutions to small, medium and large corporate organizations to enable them achieve growth and profitability. This is providing leadership in setting the business solutions standard for companies by rolling out innovative products and services in line with its vision of a better life for all its customers.


Moving on, OneBio has announced plans to launch its first incubation program for early-stage Southern African and Zimbabwean biotech entrepreneurs in May, 2019. The programme is run in partnership with TechVillage, a Zimbabwean business and innovation incubator and funded by the Finnish government through their Southern African Innovative Support (SAIS) initiative. Next on the Big 5, Aerobotics has appointed Artificial Intelligence expert and leader, Stuart as the new Head of Data Science to help drive and grow their capabilities. Stuart will work under Aerobotics Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer Benji Meltzer and is to establish new processes and frameworks for state of the art computer vision models for use within existing and upcoming Aerobotics products.


To bring the Big 5 Daily, to a close, Loon has established ground stations in Nyeri which will bring mobile internet connection to remote areas in partnership with Telkom Kenya. The facilities will transmit internet signal to balloons overhead which will then be transferred across the network and finally to individuals’ mobile phones to enable mobile internet access for people in areas where traditional ground stations are not available.
