Korea Telecom, Safaricom Kenya Launches Safiri Smart USSD for Epidemic Prevention

Korea Telecom, Safaricom and the Kenyan Ministry of Health partnered to launch Safiri Smart. It is a USSD solution that is used for preventing and controlling the epidemic spread of diseases.

Safari Smart is aimed at helping the Ministry of Health to tackle the spread of diseases such as Ebola. It is part of Korea Telecom’s Global Epidemic Prevention Project that prevents the transmission of infectious diseases.

Safaricom subscribers who opt into the service will be notified about any epidemics that have broken out at their travel destination. The information includes preventive measures and symptoms of the diseases.

Safaricom’s users can access Safiri Smart services by dialing *265#. They will be freely notified of disease outbreaks and preventive measures. The solution is currently being accessed in Ghana and Laos via mobile apps. Itis used to inform citizens about areas prone to attack and provides reports for NGO workers.

Before this partnership, Safaricom had collaborated with the Ministry of Health to introduce Fafanuka – a platform that provides information on the prevention, management, and care of non-communicable diseases.
