In Africa, more than 1 billion people have little or no access to electricity. People rely massively on alternative means of energy, with solar as the most harnessed. Off-grid communities are now able to switch to Solar Home systems which serve as an affordable alternative. Recently, companies like Azuri Technologies, Salpha Energy and the Innovation: Africa, are spearheading solar electricity distribution in Africa.

One of the recent initiatives is the Light for All Nigerians Initiative (LITAN). It is the brainchild of Salpha Energy, supported by the Nigerian government. The initiative seeks to provide solar home systems to 80 million Nigerians living in off-grid communities. It can power three LED bulbs for 24 hours, a radio set, and a mobile phone. Salpha has deployed nearly 1500 solar home systems across several off-grid communities in Borno, Lagos, Oyo and Abia States.
