In a bid to boost internet penetration in Lagos Nigeria, MainOne —West Africa’s leading internet connectivity and data solutions provider, has launched ‘Digital Lagos: Broadband for All’ project. The company will through this initiative, drive digital transformation in Lagos State.

The ambition to digitally transform Lagos was inspired by Lagos Governor-elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision. Sanwo-Olu stated that technology will boost the law, education government processes and ease of doing business in Lagos.

MainOne plans to deploy broadband infrastructure to over 1,000 health centres, 3,000 schools, 300 government agencies, 10,000 CCTV locations, business districts and public Wi-Fi hotspots across the state. This will be achieved through open-access fiber-optic networks.

During the project campaign launch on the 22nd of May 2019, Funke Opeke the CEO of MainOne stated that they are open to partnership with the Lagos State Government and important stakeholders to achieve the Digital Lagos dream.  She stated that this project will aid citizens from all walks of life with an improved quality life. She mentioned that they will invest N25 billion through the next 2-3 years to actualize the project.

The money will be used to develop critical fiber optic infrastructure that will enable broadband services within the state. Upon completion, the project will enable sustainable economic growth, modernized education health, and other services.

MainOne has been a major contributor to digital transformation across the West African States. Earlier in the year, the broadband company in partnership with Facebook invested over N120 billion towards the expansion of localized fiber networks across Ogun and Edo States, Nigeria. They deployed about 1000 kilometers of fiber to enable broadband access for government and other institutions in the area. MainOne’s existing 700-kilometer network in Lagos is used by Andela, ccHub, Paga, and Flutterwave.
