The latest industry statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission for June 2019 have revealed that the number of mobile internet subscribers in Nigeria fell in June 2019.

According to the report, this will be the first time this will be recorded since June 2018. The statistics revealed that mobile internet subscribers fell by 332,338, leaving the total numbers from 122,624,417 in May 2019 to 122,292,079 in June 2019.

MTN led the trend by losing 178,103 subscribers, reducing its total subscribers to 52,254,917. 9mobile followed suit, losing up to 310,924, thereby reducing its subscribers to 9,039,553.

Globacom and Airtel, however, broke the loss jinx by gaining new subscribers. Globacom gained 196,816 new subscribers, amounting to 29,022,349 total subscribers, while Airtel gained 42,510, amounting to 31,975,260 total subscribers.

MTN’s loss did not affect its market position, as the telco still topped the chart. The telco topped the chart owing 37.56% of the market share, translating to 65,259,375 subscribers. Globacom displaced Airtel on the chart by a 26.82% increase to 46,594,981 subscribers. Airtel came 3rd place with 26.43%, totalling 45,929,995 subscribers. 9mobile maintained its 4th position with 9.19% at 15,965,250 subscribers.

The report also revealed that 4G and 3G broadband subscription didn’t fly, as it grew at a very slow pace in June 2019. The 3G and 4G subscribers grew to 63,593,329 from 63,244,610 in May 2019, indicating a 200,000 increment.

9Mobile recorded the highest number of porters, as 8,661 users ported the network in the month of June 2019. MTN came in 2nd place with 1,524, Globacom recorded 420 porters, while Airtel had 241 porters.
