South Africa’s ICON CGC (ICON Comic and Gaming Convention) is an annual global comic and gaming convention that has been on for years in Johannesburg. The 3-day event connects enthusiasts of trending card games, board games, anime, manga etc. and geeks from all age group and interest.

The event offers shares business insight on pop culture, reviews and understanding of challenges that the comic and gaming industry in Africa face. It also creates an avenue for the Animation du Monde pitch competition—where graphic designers compete and showcase their work.

Nigeria’s Moshood Shades Ridwan came out tops of the competition with his animiation titled ‘Into the Odd’ alongside; Cate Wood Hunter ‘Pixel’s Plan’ and Sean Steinberg and Sean Braam ‘Flying Low’. Moshood whose work went viral with the hashtag #WeAreNigerianCreatives last year, won the first ever Cartoon Network Africa Creative Lab Competition with his work ‘Garbage Boy and Trash Can’ in South Africa. This paved way for him to partner with Cartoon Network Studio to produce pilots that will premiere on Cartoon Network this year.

The event also featured the regional final for the World Cosplay Summit (WCS) competition– an annual international cosplay event that promotes friendly international exchange through Japanese pop culture. Two teams were selected to represent South Africa (and by extension Africa) at WCS that will be held in Nagoya, Japan in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
