South Africa’s ICON CGC (ICON Comic and Gaming Convention) is an annual global comic and gaming convention that has been on for years in Johannesburg. The 3-day event connects enthusiasts of trending card games, board games, anime, manga etc. and geeks from all age group and interest.

The event offers shares business insight on pop culture, reviews and understanding of challenges that the comic and gaming industry in Africa face. It also creates an avenue for the Animation du Monde pitch competition—where graphic designers compete and showcase their work.

Nigeria’s Moshood Shades Ridwan came out tops of the competition with his animiation titled ‘Into the Odd’ alongside; Cate Wood Hunter ‘Pixel’s Plan’ and Sean Steinberg and Sean Braam ‘Flying Low’. Moshood whose work went viral with the hashtag #WeAreNigerianCreatives last year, won the first ever Cartoon Network Africa Creative Lab Competition with his work ‘Garbage Boy and Trash Can’ in South Africa. This paved way for him to partner with Cartoon Network Studio to produce pilots that will premiere on Cartoon Network this year.
