Big news! Lagos based medtech startup, ‘MDaaS Global’ has secured over $1 million equity funding. Up to 12 investors were involved in the round that commenced on the 15th of March. The startup listed in the US Securities and Exchange Commission and the total offering amount was $1,580,062 while the amount sold was $1,055,496, with about $524,566 left to be sold. The startup, however did not disclose if they intend to raise the remaining amount.
Next on the Big 5, The Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative ‘CiTi’ collaborated with the City of Cape Town to roll out a fully funded Top Tech Tools for Women in Business Program. The program is a ten-week program that will kick off in April, it aims to support 25 women in securing their business for the future in the digital economy. Application closes 5th of April. Moving on, the MTN Ghana foundation has commissioned a modern library for a High School in Ghana Eastern region. The facility is a 20-seater ICT Centre, 200 capacity library and Teachers common area. The foundation also partnered with Huawei Ghana to deploy fiber broadband to enable internet connections for the school. The library grants over 2000 students access to textbooks, research materials, electronic books from reputable databases and publishers worth up to $112,487.64.
There is also news that, the Skoll Foundation just announced mPharma as a recipient of the 2019 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. The award will be presented on April 10th at the Skoll World Forum, University of Oxford. mPharma recently entered made an agreement to acquire Haltons Pharmacy, the second largest Pharmacy chain in Kenya. This deal is subject to regulatory approval. The selected startups will receive $1.5 million investment or core support grant from Skoll to scale their work and increase their impact.
Finally, The FarmCrowdy Group (FCG) has officially launched FarmGate Africa, a new subsidiary that seeks to bridge the market access challenges experienced by farmers and major processors. This new technology was launched in an event at their Lagos Office. Farmgate Africa is focused on providing major processors and international buyers the opportunity to purchase commodities directly from farming clusters through technology while optimizing market access to African farmers and invariably, improving their income.
