Safaricom has succumbed to users’ wish to stop the expiration of calls, SMS and data bundle in Kenya. The move came barely a few weeks after the uproar on the expiration of mobile bundles.

Last week, we wrote a gist about the Kenyan government’s bar on the expiration of mobile bundles by telecom companies operating in the country.

A few days after this policy, Kenyan ICT practitioner took Safaricom, Telkom Kenya, and Airtel Kenya to court over the same issue where he urged the tribunal to order the telcos to furnish users with current data tariffs or display the data tariffs on their websites.

It was on this basis that Safaricom stopped the expiry of calls and data bundles.

The CEO of Safaricom, Micheal Joseph revealed that its move to stop the expiration of data was in tandem with the company’s wish to begin afresh. During the 19th service anniversary, he said that Safaricom was simple, transparent and honest in its business dealings.

He also revealed that the new plan will enhance customer’s freedom to purchase their choicest talk time and data bundles.

Safaricom’s users will be able to view the amount of data (MBs), call minutes and SMS charges before completing any transaction using a USSD code.

The data none expiry service is available on the Safaricom’s new plan and can be used at the dial of *544#.

Customers who subscribe to the new call and SMS plans via *544# will get 50% extra talk time. They will also be able to bar promotional messages using the code *100#.

The *100# code also gives a drop-down menu where users can confirm the data spent and SIM PUK.
