Snapchat May Launch a Gaming Platform

There have been speculations on Snap planning to launch a new gaming platform for snapchat at the Snap Partner Summit in Los Angeles set for the 4th of April 2019. Snapchat earlier launched ‘snappables’ an AR lens game sometime last year, but the new platform ‘Project Cognac’ would allow developers create games that would be in the snapchat app. According to a report from CNET, Snap bought out Australian game studio, ‘Prettygreat’ last January- which gave off the new gaming push.

The Chinese tech multinational company ‘Tencent’ that owns Riot Games, League of Legends and popular messaging app, WeChat bought a 12 percent stake in Snap last year. Tencent said that the transaction was so they could “explore cooperation opportunities with the company on mobile games publishing and newsfeed.”

This launch will be another source of making money and increasing user engagement for the company. Just like Facebook Messenger, that has games directly in the app, this would offer a new source of revenue for Snap from developers looking to place games in the app, from advertisers looking to place ads in games, and also from iPhone and Android-style in-game purchases.

Launched in 2011, Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that is used globally. It was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, former students at Stanford University, and developed by Snap Inc., originally Snapchat Inc.

One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients.
