Jack Ma’s Africa Netpreneur Prize Initiative has shortlisted 50 startups out of over 22000 applications submitted from all over Africa. The first 50 will be accessed via video-call interviews and 20 will be selected for the semi-final pitch. 

Next, on the Big 5, Tunisia-based Galactech has raised an undisclosed 6-figure pre-Series A fund from the Oman Technology Fund and other angel investors. The sum will be for scaling its Value-Added Services and on new innovative solutions.

In Kenya, Strathmore University has collaborated with Fortinet to develop a cybersecurity certificate course for students. It has become the first academic institution in Kenya to join the Security Academy Program. 

Also in Kenya, Safaricom will soon begin its KES 20 smartphone loan program in partnership with Google. It plans to offer 1 million affordable smartphones for sale through the program. 

In Sub-Saharan Africa, Facebook has begun a new on-platform campaign dubbed, ‘Three Questions to Help Stamp Out False News’. This aims to educate users on how to detect potential fake news, specifically about COVID-19.
