Twitter Pause Move to Delete Inactive Username and Account

Twitter has paused the move to delete inactive accounts and usernames on its platform. This move came as a follow-up to its statement to delete inactive usernames and accounts in December. 

Earlier this week, Twitter released a statement to the Verge that it will reach out to users of inactive accounts and usernames via mail to inform them of a plan deactivation of their account.  

The statement received serious backlash from users. They decried that the platform didn’t provide a memorization function (like the recycled bin). A function where a deleted account can be preserved especially for dead people.

Users also argue that if the microsite goes through with the planned deactivation, they wont access accounts of deceased family, friends or celebrities. 

The backlash and reaction prompted Twitter to take a U-turn on its plans. The microsite revealed via a tweet on its handle that it omitted the impact of deceased person accounts and will not go through with the planned deactivation. 

However, the microsite will find a new way to memorize the user’s account. After which they will through with the planned deactivation. 

The company also noted that it will broaden its inactivity policy in the future. The new policy will comply with global regulations and to ensure the integrity of the service.
