Respect they say is a two-way street and Uber has proven this. The ride-hailing company which has been launching a series of features to ensure the safety of their riders has finally levelled the playing ground by setting rules to keep rides in check. The ride-hailing giant announced on the 28th of May 2019, that they will now ban riders with low ratings.

Uber’s rating system has so far been a means to put drivers in check. This system scores the driver’s performance of the driver through the passenger’s ratings. It goes a long way in influencing drivers that Uber gives the rider. However, Uber has announced that riders with ratings below average will be banned.

They released community guidelines that could boost a rider’s ratings like; polite behaviour, neatness—avoid dirtying the vehicle, sticking to Uber’s speed limits etc. Riders who default will receive several notifications regarding their behaviour before being deactivated. Uber, however, didn’t reveal what the rating threshold for the riders will be. The ratings vary from city to city, and all errant passengers will receive life bannings.

Kate Parker, Uber’s head of safety brand and initiatives wrote on a blog post that just as respect is reciprocal, accountability also goes both ways and, on that note, it is fair to expect riders a certain rating threshold just as have been expected of the drivers.

Uber’s app will provide riders with tips on how to maintain a high rating. Uber will also be launching an educational campaign for riders and drivers regarding the community guidelines. This service will be rolled out at first in the US and Canada with subsequent countries to follow.
