The African film market is a lucrative one. It is home to Nigeria’s thriving film industry Nollywood, one of the largest film industries in the world. Nollywood movies’ earnings have grown tremendously in the past decades through box office returns.
With box office earnings on the rise, there is a need to create an accurate data platform. Despite indigenous bodies like the Cinema Exhibitors’ Association of Nigeria track box office earnings, there are situations where their credibility is questioned. Some insiders in the industry allege that the earnings cannot be trusted, considering that filmmakers and production companies declare earnings.
To end this controversy, Comscore, a US-based media analytics company that is famous for providing reliable box office measurement data has expanded its operations to nine African countries to capture over 95% of all revenue and admissions. They will focus operations in West and Southern African countries– Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Namibia, South Africa, eSwatini, Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. In the future, they plan to expand to other parts of Africa.
