Mobile network operators invest a lot to ensure network coverage across Africa. Despite their efforts, some regions in Africa do not have network coverage. It has been estimated that about 1.1 million people in rural Sub-Saharan Africa are yet unserved. Africa Mobile Networks Ltd (AMN) saw the need and decided to build base stations to serve rural communities. They provide CapEx-free (capital expenditure free) routes to existing licensed mobile network operators (MNOs). AMN has its headquarter in the UK and subsidiaries in Nigeria, Guinea Bissau, Cameroun, DRC, and Zambia.

Vanu Inc. is another company that is interested in providing network coverage for communities who lack connectivity. They provide wireless infrastructure solutions, technology tools, cell sites, and support services to ensure successful implementation. Vanu was founded as far back as 1998 in Massachusetts and has established offices in India and Rwanda.

These two companies realized that their collective goal is geared towards providing network coverage in rural communities and capitalized on their strengths. In the last two years, Vanu has been providing AMN with equipment, tools, and services that allow mobile network operators to serve rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa. They recently announced a new deal that will make the total number of orders exceed 3000 Vanu systems within two years of partnership.

Andrew Beard, the CEO of Vanu, sees the partnership as a significant opportunity for both organizations to positively impact more communities in the future. AMN’s CEO, Michael Darcy also noted that Vanu’s equipment will enable them to create cost-effective solutions to increase subscribers and profit for the mobile network operators in Africa.
