Technology is beyond entertainment and socialization; it is also a means for information and education. It encompasses all spheres of life, considering that it is involved in almost everything we do. Vodacom South Africa leveraged technology in 2017 to roll out a Mum &  baby service. A service that supplies a large number of South African parents’ access to verified information during and after pregnancy.

The Mum & Baby service leverages technology to connect mothers and caregivers with information that is based on stage-based pregnancy, maternal, neonatal, child health advice and wellbeing. The service can be accessed via; SMS, educational articles, tutorials, videos, and tools like a due date calculator. The Mum & Baby service subscribers recently grew to 1.4 million.

About 95% said it influenced their decision to breastfeed and about 97% said it helped them consider going to a health centre for check-ups. Another 96% said the information received influenced their decision to vaccinate their children.

A research shows up to 81% of Mum & Baby service lives in the Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces. 30% of the users are pregnant women, 27% of the users are guys and 24% are fathers, with an age range of 18 and 24.
