Vodacom Tanzania and WorldRemit have partnered to scale cross-border transfers for Tanzanians in the diaspora. Over ten million Tanzanian M-Pesa users will leverage the partnership to receive funds from their family and friends abroad.

According to Vodacom Tanzania, the funds will be transferred directly to M-Pesa wallets. The receivers of the cross-border transfers will not require a bank account or an internet connection.

However, Tanzanians abroad will require the WorldRemit app to effect transfers. This is swift, affordable and cuts out the traditional means of sending cash home.

Epimack Mbeteni, Vodacom Tanzania M-Pesa Director, said the deal will Tanzanians receive funds swiftly from across the globe through M-Pesa.

“It will enable families and friends in the country to conveniently receive money through M-Pesa from across the world. This is just one more way we are making our customers’ lives easier,” he said.

According to Cynthia Ponera, Country Manager for Tanzania at WorldRemit, they are happy to partner with Vodacom Tanzania.

“We are delighted to partner with Vodacom to further expand our network and connect over nine million MPesa customers to our award-winning money transfer service. Our partnership will drive down the cost of sending money to Tanzania. It will enable recipients in some of the most remote locations to receive money from abroad in seconds,” Cynthia said.

The World Bank says that the average cost of sending £120 from the UK to Tanzania is about 9.5%. However, WorldRemit will be offering the same service at a minimum of 2% cost.
