MTN will be the first operator in the region to introduce 5G if it succeeds to launch ahead of other big telcos in Ghana.
MTN Ghana’s CEO, Selorm Adavehoh, has stated that the company expects to be able to introduce 5G services in the nation as early as next year.
“We are constantly working to ensure that we are the first to launch the next technology, not only to be the first but also to bring that technology to market and create value from it. So there’s 2G, 3G, 4G, and now 5G, which should be available next year.”
MTN Ghana, according to Adavehoh, is planning a $200 million network infrastructure makeover in 2021 to reach this target. Demand has increased as a result of the pandemic, thus the investment will be far higher than the $150 million originally projected.
MTN Ghana announced its initial infrastructure spending figure in April, as the telco’s subscriber base increased by 0.6 million to 25.0-million.
The growth of 0.4 million active data subscribers to 11.2-million and 0.1 million MoMo users to 10.7 million was fueled by continued demand for data and increased adoption of new digital payment systems.
By the end of 2022, the operator plans to have deployed 4G at all base stations in Accra, the country’s capital, as well as all of its statewide sites, as part of this $200 million upgrade.
