Much has been said about foldable smartphones in the past year. Big guns like Samsung, Motorola, LG, Apple and Huawei promised to launch foldable smartphones this year and have even showed off prototypes. However, the world does not need to wait any longer as American-based Chinese company, Royole unveils the world’s first foldable phone called, FlexPai.

At the CES in Las Vegas where the smartphone was showcased, spectators from tech media were able to assess the gadget for some minutes. It is 7.8-inches in size and it runs on an Android OS, it is tricky to say if it’s a phone or a tablet and it can pass off as both.

Royole was established five years ago for the purpose of developing and selling flexible displays. According to The Verge, most softwares loaded on the smartphone were dysfunctional so things would still need to be perfected.

When it comes to specs, the FlexPai offers two SIM slots and provides an auto-detection system that only shows content on the half of the folded screen that you’re facing at any given time.

When you try to bend the AMOLED display, it requires a fair amount of force, this gives the guarantee that it can actually survive a rough handling. There seems to be a small gap between the two splits of the screen and although it’s a big phone, it can still be kept in a purse. It is quite portable when used. One portion of the two-sided phone is ascribed as the primary, and its content rolls out onto the full tablet screen when it is opened.

The beta version is already on sale in China for 8,999 yuan and $1,320 if you live in the U.S. We think it is quite remarkable to see that Royole is taking the first step ahead of established competitors like Samsung, Apple, Motorola and other manufacturers to the market with this device. What do you think?
