Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk unveiled Grokipedia, an online encyclopedia created by his artificial‑intelligence company xAI, positioning it as a direct competitor to Wikimedia Foundation’s Wikipedia.

The platform, labelled version 0.1 at launch, reportedly hosts more than 885,000 articles, a fraction of Wikipedia’s more than 7 million English‑language pages. Grokipedia uses content that appears to be generated and curated via xAI’s Grok chatbot, rather than through Wikipedia’s traditional volunteer editor model.

Musk, who has criticised Wikipedia for perceived ideological bias, described Grokipedia as “a necessary step” toward what he called the “xAI goal of understanding the Universe.” The platform features a minimalist interface and does not currently allow direct article editing by the public, although users may submit suggestions via a feedback mechanism.

Despite its ambitious launch, Grokipedia has drawn immediate scrutiny. Organisations analysing content say some entries closely mirror Wikipedia’s language and structure, while others display concerns over fewer citations and potential bias. The Wikimedia Foundation emphasised the differences between its volunteer‑based model and the AI‑driven approach of Grokipedia, stating it is still “in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works.”

Musk’s introduction of Grokipedia signifies a major step into the knowledge‑platform domain, merging artificial intelligence with content creation and distribution. Whether the new service will attract large‑scale adoption or significantly disrupt established knowledge repositories remains to be seen.
