It may soon be time to bid farewell to security checks, long queues and flight delays when travelling to close cities by air as Volvo is working to replace aeroplanes with autonomous cars. With autonomous cars, Volvo believes that the aviation industry will be transformed.

The autonomous car or a driverless car is a vehicle capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. It combines different techniques to perceive their surroundings, including radar, laser light, GPS, odometry, and computer vision. Advanced control systems interpret sensory information to identify appropriate navigation paths, as well as obstacles and relevant signage.

The Volvo’s new 360c autonomous concept it’s of the 100 per cent autonomous, mobile relaxation chamber ilk.

The Swedish car maker wants 360c to do more than changing the unproductive travel time into useful and enjoyable hours on the road. Volvo now wants to thwart the airport and use its cars to drive all the way from A to Z, not just A to B.

The company outlined its vision for the future with its 360c autonomous car concept, saying short flights within close cities could be replaced by autonomous cars. Without the steering wheel and driver and passenger seats, there would be scope for more functional spaces for longer trips.

“Domestic air travel sounds great when you buy your ticket, but it really isn’t. The 360c represents what could be a whole new take on the industry,” says Marten Levenstam a Volvo executive.

“The sleeping cabin allows you to enjoy premium comfort and peaceful travel through the night and wake up refreshed at your destination. It could enable us to compete with the world’s leading aircraft makers.”

Overnight travel via an autonomous car equipped with a sleeping cabin could revolutionise travel allowing for greater use of time and resources while reducing congestion.

Volvo has envisaged the cabin of autonomous cars to be used as a mobile office, making business travel more accommodating. This concept would allow for workers to live further out of the city centre with travel time to and from work used constructively.
