Launched in collaboration with the UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO), the GSMA has announced the launching of its newest GSMA Innovation Fund to address critical humanitarian issues.
The GSMA has awarded more than GBP5 million (US$6.3 million) to startups, SMEs, and social companies since 2017 through its GSMA Innovation Fund.
To test and support new solutions that use digital technologies, particularly mobile, to address humanitarian challenges in low- and middle-income countries, the GSMA Humanitarian Innovation Fund offers grant funding of up to GBP250,000 (US$320,000) and additional non-financial and technical assistance. Natural disasters like floods, earthquakes, and typhoons, as well as food insecurity and displacement, are examples of humanitarian concerns.
Also, the fund is looking for solutions that use cutting-edge tech like AI and the internet of things to make disaster preparedness and response better; that help people in crisis, like refugees and displaced people, get the help they need, like services and information that can save their lives; or that take an existing innovation and find a way to use it in a different setting.
