Apple has deleted Threads and WhatsApp from its Chinese app store in response to a directive from the nation’s internet watchdog, which raised issues related to national security.

“We are obligated to follow the laws in the countries where we operate, even when we disagree,” an Apple spokesperson said. “The Cyberspace Administration of China ordered the removal of these apps from the China storefront based on their national security concerns. These apps remain available for download on all other storefronts where they appear.”

Both of the Meta-owned apps were not extensively used and were previously restricted in China. Only virtual private networks (VPNs), which can mask an online identity and encrypt internet traffic, can be used to access them within the nation.

The chairman of Beijing-based investment adviser BDA China, Duncan Clark, stated that Apple’s decision to remove the apps signifies a “further distancing between already separated tech universes” within the nation and abroad.

“It will cause inconvenience to consumers and businesses (in China) who deal with family, friends, or customers overseas. Even if they use VPNs to access their existing WhatsApp apps, these will become obsolete over time and require updating,” Clark said.

Other social media applications, such as X (previously Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, are still accessible in Apple’s China app store.

The news from the tech giant comes amid declining iPhone sales in the second-biggest economy in the world. According to market research agency IDC, its smartphone sales fell by an astounding 10% in the first quarter of this year.

Just last month, Apple CEO Tim Cook made an exclusive visit to Shanghai to inaugurate the world’s second-largest Apple Store.

Due to rising competition, unfavourable economic conditions, and nationalism, Apple has lost ground in China in recent months.

China continues to be a significant market for Apple, being the largest market after the US, in addition to being a vital hub for production.
