Google has announced that beginning April 1, next month, it will charge 7.5 percent VAT on all taxable goods and services to Nigerian customers.

“As a result of new legislation in Nigeria, Google would be required to charge 7.5 percent VAT on all taxable products and services beginning April 1, 2022.” “With regard to your Google business account, no action is required on your part,” Google stated.

The 7.5 percent VAT, according to Google, is in line with the government’s new rule.

As part of the 2020 Finance Bill, the Nigerian government increased VAT to 7.5 percent from 5 percent in January 2020.

Due to a large influx of young Nigerians abandoning their home nation for greener pastures in Western countries, this new rise will take effect immediately.

Femi Adesina, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, stated that the Finance Bill has five strategic objectives.

“These goals are: Promoting fiscal equity by reducing regressive taxation; Reforming domestic tax laws to align with global best practices; Introducing tax incentives for infrastructure and capital market investments; Supporting Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Businesses in line with our Ease of Doing Business Reforms; and Raising Government Revenues.”

The 7.5 percent VAT has also been applied for Nigerian customers by Zoom and Facebook’s parent company META.
