The Pixel 6 is Google’s next flagship phone, and it was unveiled to the public for the first time.
Google designed its own system-on-chip for the 5G phones, which will be available in the fall.
Google, like the majority of Android phone makers, has long used Qualcomm’s SOCs to power its handsets.
However, by creating its own Processor to serve as the device’s brain, Google is able to better tune the chip for the aspects that are most important to it.
Tensor, Google’s latest processor, can boost computing power and improve video capabilities in Pixel phones, boosting features that were behind those of competitors in prior Pixel models.
Tensor is an integrated circuit, not a single processor. While it’s reasonable to call it Google-designed, it’s also unclear which components were created by Google and which were licensed from third parties.
Google is expected to release two new products: a mobile TPU for AI operations and a new Titan M2 chip for security. The rest of the components, such as the CPU, GPU, and 5G modem, remain unknown.
The Pixel 6 will come with a matte metal finish and a 6.4-inch display, while the Pixel 6 Pro will come with a shinier polished aluminum finish and a 6.7-inch display.
The Pixel 6 includes two cameras: a wide-angle and an ultrawide-angle lens, while the Pixel 6 Pro adds a telephoto zoom lens.
Prices and exact release dates have yet to be announced.
The Tensor chip’s increased computing capability will allow Google to improve artificial intelligence on Pixels. Improved speech recognition, such as text dictation, and more high-end photography, such as software enhancements that make photographs less fuzzy, are examples. Google CEO Sundar Pichai stated in a statement, “This is the largest breakthrough in Pixel we’ve made to far, created in conjunction with our AI and Android teams to give the finest experience at the confluence of hardware, software, and AI for years to come.”
