Twitter has begun rolling out a feature that will allow certain users to set their profile image to “nonfungible tokens” NFT they own as a way to show their interest in the rapidly developing field of digital art.
One-of-a-kind, verifiable digital assets referred to as “nonfungible tokens” are available for trading on the blockchain, the technology that powers cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin.
There has been a scramble among social media businesses, and Twitter’s statement is the latest.
NFTs, such as figures from the popular “Bored Apes” collection, have been turning up as Twitter avatars in the last several weeks.
Only subscribers to Twitter’s subscription service will have access to the new functionality.
The digital wallet in which the NFTs are housed will be linked to the Twitter account of the individual whose ownership of the NFTs has to be verified.
In addition, the images will appear differently on Twitter than conventional profile pics.
New NFT avatars will be hexagons instead of circles, and users can click on them to learn more about the artwork, such as its author and where it’s been categorized.
New NFT profile images are being rolled out in small batches at the moment.
Twitter Blue customers in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can access the functionality through the iOS app, although the new avatars will be visible to all Twitter users, regardless of platform.
As a result of digital art pieces selling for millions of dollars and artists, celebrities, and companies all coming on board to create and sell NFTs, the NFT market has expanded in the last year.
