The new world order post-COVID-19 has brought about an increased dependence on mobile phones and gadgets for various life activities.

People of all ages spend a lot more time behind a computer screen working or studying virtually and even longer hours on their mobile devices.

While the changes may have come to stay and the benefits of using these devices cannot be ignored, it’s best to remind ourselves of the need to look out for our personal well being and in this case, care for our eyesight.

Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain is an ailment caused by uncontrolled screen times by individuals.

Its symptoms include dryness and stinging sensation in the eyes, blurry vision, a slight headache, and probable ache in your neck, back, and shoulders.

Expensive blue light filters/ computer glasses can be easily avoided by following the next few tips.

• Maintain sufficient distance between your line of sight and your device. It is advisable to keep about 25 inches of space apart, about an arm’s length, when using your devices.

• Adjust Screen Lighting: Maintain a balance between the screen brightness level and the surrounding light. Brighter screens usually require extra effort on the eyes.

• Apply the 20-20-20 rule: Take a break every 20 minutes and look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds

• Reduce device usage before bedtime: Blue lights have been proven to influence the sleep patterns and amount of rest the body gets while sleeping. Use nighttime settings on devices and computers that minimize blue light exposure and limit screen time one to two hours before bedtime.

• Maintain eye moisture levels by blinking regularly. Constantly staring at a screen makes us blink less often, which dries out the eyes. You may also consider using artificial tears to lubricate your eyes or a desktop humidifier.
