It’s a new month and the weekend it’s almost here! I know you are excited! Well, here’s today’s edition of the Big 5 Daily.

Big news, Nigeria startup Tizeti has launched a voice calling service— WifiCall.ng for individuals and businesses. The service will allow users make and receive clear and unlimited calls anywhere in the world. In the meantime, the service is only open for Nigerians however, they have plans for expansion within and outside Africa in 2020. This a big one for Nigerians!

Moving on, MTN Group LTD, one Jumia’s major shareholder has made the move to sell up to 50% of its $655 million share in Jumia. The Telco plans to sell in other to raise fund to pay off debt and also venture into new markets. MTN’s 19% stake sale is predicted to happen before the end of the year. MTN revealed in March that their, Net debt rose to 63.5 billion rand from 57 billion rand in 2018, and proceeds from the sale will be used to pay that down.

Next on the Big 5, Poa! Internet partnered with Fon to launch a free public Wi-Fi network across Nairobi and Kiambu. They will leverage on this partnership to provide free Wi-Fi in the streets of Kibera, Jamhuri, Kawangware, Kangemi, Kabiria, Waithaka, Racecourse, Githunguri, Kinoo, Kikuyu, Kiambu, Tig’ang’a, Kirigiti, Ndumberi, and Githunguri. They have deployed more than 3000 hotspots across Kenya with the launch of street Wi-Fi for subscribers.

There is also news that, Equity Bank Kenya and Safaricom, two giant companies in East Africa have partnered to create a joint transformation that will enable Kenyan’s access swift fintech solutions. They plan to achieve this by exploring regional synergies, build more inclusive financial products and by sharing technical knowledge to build a common approach to fraudulence and cybersecurity.  Still on financial inclusion, Visa and PalmPay also partnered to drive financial inclusion across Nigeria, Ghana and Tanzania. The partnership will see that Visa cardholders initiate payments with PalmPay, by attaching their card details to their PalmPay profile.

Finally, Huawei has allocated funds to the Kenyan government for the Kenzo Techno City project. The President of China President Xi Jinping on behalf of Huawei, signed a partnership with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya for Sh67.5 billion. The sum of Sh50 billion will go into Kenzo Techno City expressway construction, while the remaining Sh 17.5 billion will go to the data centre and smart cities project. This is great news for Kenya!
