The anticipated Project Loon is finally coming to Africa. Google has signed a partnership agreement with Telkom Kenya to begin the first commercial trials soon. Project Loon aims to provide internet access to rural communities around the world which do not have access to the internet network.
It seems that this is the season of on-demand ride-hailing motorcycling. Last month, we had the stories of Max.ng, Gokada, and SafeBoda feature in our Big 5 Daily. Well, Kigali-based SafeMotos has rebranded to CanGo. They have also officially launched in Kinshasa Congo, the third biggest city in Africa.
Next, on the Big 5, D.Light has secured $18 million funds. The off-grid pay-as-you-go solar company offers access to clean, reliable energy to consumers in Africa, Asia, and the US. They plan to use this fund to expand its business across Africa.
YouTube has shockingly withdrawn plans to launch sport live-streaming service. Just two days back, on the 2nd of July, they announced plans to grant subscribers access to stream football events. Sports contents on YouTube will only be available as highlights or video-on-demand.
A mobile library has been set up by GE Nigeria and UKF for pupils in Lagos State, Nigeria. The project called “Read to Me” has already been launched in four primary schools to boost digital literacy across the Akowonjo community.
