We have news that the Rwandan-based Technology Company, Mara Corporations has partnered with Rwanda government to setup a factory of locally produced phone in April. The country’s minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire mentioned that Smartphones are part of their ICT services and to ensure that they are affordable, different strategies will be implemented to ensure each household in Rwanda could afford one. She said negotiations with Mara Corporations are ongoing and by April, the factory would have commenced production. The country hopes to boost digital literacy by ensuring citizens could access smartphones at an affordable rate.
Tanzanian based company, led by Given Edward has produced an educational content App called Mtabe using Artifical Intelligence. Prior to this, Given Edward had launched MyElimu– an App that connects Students in 2014. The Mtabe App delivers learning content to students who cannot access textbooks and the internet. 15,000 students so far have accessed the app and notable progress have since been recorded.
Next On the Big 5, Avanti and MainOne have come to an agreement to improve broadband penetration within Nigeria by making available the latest KA-band based satellite communication services to enterprises in remote areas in the country. MainOne is to grasp on Avanti’s newly launched satellite to allow high flexible 100% capacity services coverage within Nigeria. Great news, right?
Moving on, Gemaito, a Digital Security Company in Uganda has supplied Cogent Automated Biometric Identification System (CABIS) and LiveScan technology to the Ugandan Police. This solutions will enable the Ugandan Police solve crimes better via electronic collection, storage and processing of fingerprints, palm prints and facial captures. The LiveScan will be spread in police stations and courts nationwide. It will also allow capture of the subject’s mugshot, biometric data and biographical data. This development will help the Ugandan Police grow and evolve in line with the future demands, don’t you think so?
Finally on the Big 5 Daily, Cote d’Ivoire based Telecom Digital Afrique Telecom (DAT) has launched a ticketing and smart card system which will enable Ivory Coast citizens access contactless cards with which they can board more than 700 buses every day. This smart service allows SOTRA (Abidjan Local Bus Company) passengers buy and top up their smart card online through the DAT powered Platform. Smart cards can be used to topup using any mobile money service and also, bank e-wallets available in Côte d’Ivoire via a user-friendly interface.
