8 African hardware startups have been selected to pitch at the 2019 ASME Innovation Showcase competition. The final event holds today in Kenya and three startups will go home with a total sum of $30000, technical support and a ticket to the ISHOW Bootcamp in New York.
SoGal, a Los Angeles based Venture Capital Company has branched out to Johannesburg. They provide resources, education and community support for over 10000 entrepreneurs. The expansion to South Africa is a move to support female entrepreneurs from South Africa. This is a good opportunity for them to access educational materials, webinars, global pitch competitions, and mentorship.
Andela has recently added another female Country Director to its list of female directors in Nigeria, Uganda and Rwanda. They announced Janet Maingi as the new Country Director for Kenya. Janet was formerly the Director of Finance & Administration at BRCK. She was appointed because of her value as a leader, her aspirations for Kenya and reputation for leading a functional team in her previous experience. How have you been impacting your community?
Another African has impacted her community. This time around, it is the young Felistas Zvavamwe from Zimbabwe. She figured that information seldom get delivered to parents from schools. Together with four other girls, they have developed a Messenger app, to connect parents to teachers. This way, parents will be able to keep track of their children’s activities and stay updated with administrative information in the school.
The government of the Free State Province of South Africa have partnered with Cell C to provide faster and more reliable internet connections for underserved communities. They signed an MOU to roll out internet hotspots across all cities in the province. The project will allow the government to empower youths and entrepreneurs in rural areas, develop smart cities and tourism opportunities in the province.
